Adam’s ale is the best brew

Written by englishproverbs.org

Proverbial Meaning: The best thing to drink is water.

Literal Origins: “Adam’s ale” is an old fashioned term for water, as in the stuff Adam and Eve would have drank when they were pure. Beer and tea is brewed, so the proverb suggests drinking water is better than drinking beer, or even tea.

Common Usage: The proverb is not in common use, or all that well-known.
