All roads lead to Rome

PDF Print E-mail

Proverbial Meaning: There are lots of different ways to complete a task, once you begin working on a problem you will eventually reach the conclusion.

Literal Origins: The Romans built an excellent network of roads that led out from Rome and formed an interconnecting web that spanned most of Europe, like the branches of a tree, so that almost any road could lead you to Rome one way or another.

Common Usage: This is a very well known proverb that has been in use for at least a thousand years, since around 1100, and is used most often within a group of people puzzling over the best means to complete a task. Still, its usage is not all that frequent.
